Video Game Streaming – The New Frontier!

Video gaming has always been a competitive sport. Arcade boxes earlier had their pixelated high score charts, and every kid wanted to be the one with the top scores in his neighborhood. With the internet explosion and the release of iconic first person shooter games like Doom and Counter Strike, players from all over the world began to come together. In 1997, one of the first e-sports organizations, Cyberathelete Professional League was established. Since then the gaming world has leaped forward to online gaming and streaming. Let us take a closer look at the phenomenon.

The Rise of Online Gaming and Streaming

In the past four decades, online gaming has become one of the world’s biggest entertainment industries. According to reports from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the global online gaming industry in 2010 was worth around $56 billion! This is bigger than both the magazine or the music industry and about two-thirds the film industry’s size. According to a 2011 report by Entertainment Software Association, the average age of a gamer in the United States is 37 and 42 percent of these gamers are female.

One of the biggest trends today, in live streaming is not music (as you might have previously assumed), but competitive gaming. e-sports today, attracts thousands of viewers. A number of sites today, catering specifically to gamers and their fans stream e-sport events. Several e-sport websites have exploded all over the internet as live webcasts take competitive video gaming to a completely new level, transforming it into a sport that is viewed by millions from one which was limited to just insiders.

Video Game Streaming: The Big Players

Among the big players in video game streaming today are Own3D.tv and TwitchTV. Own3D.tv began online video game streaming in 2010, and at present, the website gets over four million unique viewers a month for video game live streams. In March 2011, Electronic Sports League (ESL), the world’s largest gaming league, broadcasted the Intel Extreme Masters event, which is among the most popular gaming tournaments of the year, through Own3D. With $400,000 as prize money, the gaming tournament drew 75,000 simultaneous live viewers on single event days, while the overall audience reached several million gamers. June 2011 saw over 200,000 concurrent viewers watching a Dreamhack contest (which is based around League of Legends, another popular game) on Own3D, with about 250 GBps of traffic through the event.

And live video streaming vendor Justin.tv witnessed e-sports video streaming grow at such a rapid rate that they dedicated an entire website to it. In June 2011, they launched TwitchTV after video game streaming reached around 3.2million monthly unique views on its main website. TwitchTV now engages over 12 million unique viewers each month. Also it has had a steady month over month growth rate of 11 percent since it was launched. Besides that, TwitchTV has over 1,000 premium partners. It has also received over 80,000 downloads of its iPhone mobile app in less than a month of the app’s launch. Between October 10th and October 16th the website received massive traffic as can be seen from the following figures:

Total Hours Watched: 6,737,250

Weekly Unique Viewers: 4,214,057

Total Hours Watched per Unique Viewer: 1.6

Weekly Unique Chatters: 309,220

Peak Concurrent Viewers on a Single Stream: 125,862

Peak Concurrent Viewers on all Gaming Content: 165,250

Video Game Streaming: Popular Genres

Here are some of the most popular genres in live online video game streaming:

Adventure (Assassin’s Creed II, Lego, Lost Planet)
Strategy (StarCraft II, Total War, Worms)
Sport Games (FIFA, NBA 2K10, MLB 2K10)
Shooter (Modern Warfare 3, Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead 2)
Role-Playing (Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age)
Racing (Need for Speed: The Run Playthrough Part 1!, GP2 Asia Series 2011)
Simulation (The Sims)
Massively multiplayer online role-playing game – MMORPG (World of Warcraft, Hydra 9)

Streaming Games Online: The Legal Side

By now you might know or at least heard about the new bill related to anti-streaming video – S.978. At present, it is not illegal to stream, for instance a walk-through of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 online as it is considered to be a public performance. However, a bill like this would make such videos illegal. This bill might seem like a great thing at first glance as it helps curb piracy, but as parts of the bill are quite vague, it could lead to a few issues for members of the media/gaming enthusiast communities.

However, it is also possible that game developers and publishers may decide not to prosecute streaming gamers, thereby leaving things quite the same way as they are now. Given the huge number of such videos available on the web, it would be rather optimistic to actually think that game developers and publishers will have the time and money to pursue users every time they break this would-be law. Besides online video game streaming has generated a win-win scenario for all parties involved.

Game Streaming: A Win-Win Situation for Everyone

Websites like Own3D.tv and TwitchTV witness most of their traffic around gaming events. However, these websites feature live video feeds of gamers playing popular video games any time, as well. Some of these gamers are just amateurs who like to show their gaming skills to other gamers while some actually belong to professional gaming teams, and are preparing for the next tournament.

Besides, gamers today are increasingly monetizing matches as live video game streaming offers them another way of earning money and making a living. Live video game streaming websites like Own3D.tv and TwitchTV have revenue sharing deals with professional gaming partners. The most common types of monetization include ads, subscriptions and pay per views.

TwitchTV for instance, has a revenue sharing plan where they sell ads on the gamer’s stream and the profits earned are split between them. TwitchTV also includes automatic transcoding, where viewers can flip between a variety of quality settings, based on their connection. Besides that partners also get early access to latest technology from Twitch as well as the ability to test out new features.

The companies are also on the winning side. Zvetan Dragulev, Own3D.tv CEO explained that they get 90 percent of their video views from pro-gaming teams and events that pull in higher CPM rates as compared to traditional user generated live video streams. Besides that, advertisers also love the fact that they are catering to a well defined audience. So everyone’s happy – well, no one’s happier than the gamers would be my guess!

eSports news and tournaments.

Horst Wein Recommends Small Sided Games for Grassroots Football Development

Horst Wein, who has mentored more than 11,000 soccer coaches in 55 different countries around the world, believes that small sided games are the most essential element in developing youth soccer players. This comes from a man who knows a thing or two about this vital topic – his book “Developing Youth Football Players” is the official textbook of the Spanish Football Federation, and has also been adopted by the Football Federation of Australia, having sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide.

Small sided games in Training

Coaches should focus more on games rather than drills in training. Isolating particular techniques and concentrating on them using repetitive drills and exercises is known as the “analytical method” and often poses difficulties when the players come to apply what they have been working on in the real game scenario. The “global method” of training involves creating more game-like scenarios in training that can be more seamlessly integrated into the actual game itself. This is done through creating simplified games, which are scaled-down versions of the real game, but that can focus on particular themes necessary in the real game.

The concept of using games rather than drills and exercises has been studied for many years all around the world. Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) has been applied to many different sports and been found to be very effective. In Australia, it is also known as “Game Sense” and “Play practice.”

There are many benefits to this games-oriented method in soccer:

1.Most importantly, players prefer to play games than to do drills (especially the younger ones).

2.The games can be modified through different variables to concentrate more on specific elements that need to be addressed; The size of the playing area, the number of players, duration of the game, technical rules etc, means that in the hands of a skilful coach, games may be used to achieve all the requirements of playing the real game.

3.Small sided games require smaller pitches and can be suited to any number of players.

4.Small sided games provide a much more intense physical workout than larger games.

5.Small sided games allow the coach to develop the players Game Intelligence, as they may focus on the true dynamics of the game of soccer e.g. the 2v1 situation.

Small sided games in competition

This means that the competitions that young people play should be tailored to the specific requirements of their age group.

“The competition you play should be like your shoes, it should fit you perfectly! “

Benefits of small sided games in competition (and training):

  • More touches of the ball
  • Simpler decisions to make
  • Better game-related fitness, short duration of high-intensity vs laps
  • More time with coach per player
  • Easier to coach especially for parent coaches
  • More opportunities to solve game problems
  • More attacking opportunities (dribbling, shooting, passing )
  • More defending opportunities
  • More shooting and more goals = more fun!
  • No hiding place, players don’t get lost in these games
  • More opportunities for the full range of skills
  • Encourages better shape and awareness of team-mates
  • Encourages faster play, fast transition from defence to attack
  • Easier for young players to have success – which means enjoyment and retention for these players.

Manchester United conducted a pilot scheme in 2005 which compared 4-a-side soccer to 8-a-side soccer, the results were very telling…

On Average 4v4 versus 8v8 had:

1. 135% more passes

2. 260% more Scoring Attempts

3. 500% more Goals Scored

4. 225% more 1v1 Encounters

5. 280% more Dribbling Skills (tricks)

Small sided Games Around the World

All around the world today the value of small sided games has begun to be recognized and many federations have introduced them successfully into youth development programmes. The Dutch system focuses mainly on 4v4 and later 7v7 games before players are introduced to the 11-a-side game.

All across continental Europe there are variations of either 4v4 or 5v5 for the first game that young kids play. In the British Isles, Wales has been leading the way with small sided games being introduced there in 1996. The FA in England are determined to introduce the following structures by 2013: 5v5 (7-8 years), 7v7 (9-10 years), 9v9 (11-12 years), 11v11 (13+ years)

In general USYS (United States Youth Soccer) recommends 3v3 for under 6 years and a progression to 4v4 or 5v5, 6v6 or 7v7, 8v8 etc.

Small sided Games in the Horst Wein Model

In the Horst Wein Youth Football Development Model, the recommended progressive small sided game structure for children’s competitions is:

  • 3v3 for 7-9 years
  • 5v5 for 10 years
  • 7v7 for 11-12 years
  • 8v8 for 13 years
  • 11-a-side for 14+ years

Along with these competition games, each age group in his development model has its own complete programme of small sided, simplified games for training, which emphasize game intelligence and a deeper understanding of the tactical situations of the game of football. The training games can be used for preparing the players for their appropriate competition or as corrective measures for issues identified during play.

The emphasis is always on games for learning rather than drills and running.

The Game is the Teacher

Mini Football for 7-9 year old players

Many claim that the revolutionary game of Mini-Football (3v3 on four wide goals) for young players from 7 to 9 years of age, is a revival of street football.

MINI-FOOTBALL VS 4V4

While many advocate the benefits of 4v4, which is undoubtedly far more beneficial than 8v8 (or 7v7), Horst’s own Mini-Football game which is 3v3 on 4 wide goals has many critical advantages over 4v4.

Most importantly, the use of 4 goals instead of 2 creates:

  • Width. There is much more play down the flanks and less swarming.
  • Because there are only three players and two goals to protect, this usually results in one less-defended goal, meaning options are open.
  • The goals out wide cause players to look up for the best option, improving perception.
  • The young players learn to interpret what they see and make good decisions, improving their Game Intelligence, even at this young age.
  • There is more goalmouth action and usually all players score during a game.
  • There is more intense defending and attacking than in other small sided games.
  • There are no fixed positons providing a more rounded experience and more complete players.
  • It teaches the use of a triangular formation, which is superior for passing and support and also for balance in defence.
  • More touches on the ball.
  • More time to read the game.
  • Better passing and less long ball tactics.
  • Greater physical involvement as all players are needed in the team.

Horst Wein is the greatest living exponent of small sided games in football, having created hundreds of games both for development of young players and for greater performance in the full game.

Best Games to Buy in a Xbox 360 Sale

If you are looking to know which are the best video games to buy in an Xbox 360 sale, and you want to know when and where to find them, then continue reading.

When and Where to Find Games in a Xbox 360 Sale

When new games are released they can be very expensive, especially if you want to buy more than one at a time. The best thing to do is to wait a few months and then you can usually pick the games up in an Xbox 360 sale. You might find these in store, but for the cheapest price then usually you have to shop online. Games that are older can be bought at a very good price, with sometimes fifty percent or more off the original price. There may be the odd game that always holds its price for a very long time. A good example of this would be the Call of Duty game series, where the latest one, will be at a price close to the recommended retail price, until the next one is due out.

Knowing Which Video Games to Buy

There are hundreds of games to choose from, but which ones are the good ones to buy? If you are a seasoned gamer then you may already know the answer to that question, but if you are new to gaming or a parent of a child who owns a Xbox 360 console, then the answer may not be as obvious.

There are so many different genres to choose from, so sometimes it comes down to which type of games you like to play. I will talk about the main genres and the best games for those genres. These games will have already been released, for at least a few months. This will hopefully help you choose the best buy Xbox 360 games.
